Well, online gaming and persistent worlds are still relatively new genres, but I still give this topic a thought from time to time. When the company which was maintaining the game is all gone, then who will be maintaining it? Of course, it's rather obvious that one of the company's employees or a player could take that responsibility, but would that be possible considering there is a lot of people's characters and intellectual property on there? Surely there would be legal considerations about transferring a database containing a lot of personal information (email addresses, passwords, purchased products, etc.) to private property, not to mention that the game engine and servers probably have shared ownership among a bunch of people and/or companies.

There's no need to panic over this idea though, as this could all be decades away.

Zaishen Menagerie says hi to this Post (not only outpost, but also new Instance). But I do see them recycling the TA outpost. It would be a shame to let that go to waste.

I had only just got used to microing PS when luring and flagging heroes apart for big bosses with Searing Flames... The flagging system is going to look ugly. Will be incredibly fun though, and make theorycrafting builds even easier when testing.

I don't quite understand this Embark Beach place... Wouldn't it be more sensible to just merge every District into the partysearch for Euro/America/Asia, etc. for each outpost. What I mean is; what benefit do you get when, say, you want to get a run to Elona's Reach and everyone else wants to do UWSC?

I did this a couple of nights ago, and to be honest the hero builds aren't the main problem here - its the consets. I was getting mashed until I popped my conset and then the rest was a breeze.

When a company goes out of business, it's all over, of course. Happened to me with Hellgate:London (bad memories...). Transfer of rights and data in these cases is a matter for the lawyers, really, but essentially, it boils down to: the one who offered a service is no longer able to fulfill its obligations, and no matter what they WANT to do, they CAN'T do it.

However, why are we considering Anet's failure? There's nothing indicating they're not doing quite quite well.

There are two factors that, to me, indicate Anet will not take the GW servers down. First, it will become less and less of a burden. Eventually, they'll probably archive the BLOBs of the inactive players, and only need a very small number of servers to run the game for the few remaining players, while still being able to say "GW1 is free to play". An important public perception matter.

That's all true, and I don't expect the GW servers to be completely shut down for a very long time either. But if I manage to stay alive for another 40+ years and I'd try to launch up GW by that time out of nostalgia, I have some doubt a server would still be running somewhere.

Now if I was in the position of a game designer who has to take down their own online game due to my company going out of business, I'd probably do my best to try and switch to a fully instanced offline version of the game that players could download and even devise a way for them to download their own characters as well. I'm fully aware that this would most likely require more resources than I'd have available to me by that time though.

Holy Jeebus this post turned out sounding grim. The thing is I was trying to hit more of a wondering/hypothetical tone here but failed at it.

I thought heroes were restricted in PvP.

Whats the point of allowing 7 heroes then lol.... make PvE even easier to play while PvP still same crap with 2 only ? This would really be the clear proof than they never ever cared of PvP to be honest

how long has it been since you PvPed? Heroes haven't been allowed for ages. Heroes are for PvE, this update will have NOTHING to do with PvP - and is likely to have absolutely no affect on it.

Heroes in PvP, didn't they delete HB?

Maybe there will be a PvP version of the new central mission outpost to help grouping, not that I'm sure such a thing would be required or is necessary.

I think this new area could do with a redesigned search party interface.

And will they do anything to prevent this new place turning into a spam fest for traders.

Its a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Make every outpost in the game obsolete and force us to stand around in a reskin of the RA beach with lots of spam. Gee what fun.

Not only this the district limit will also make it differcult to get into the populated districts to find others.

Nothing worse being stuck in a district with 5 other people when the others are jam packed mostly with traders/afkers with no intention of grouping.

Getting the This district is full message is annoying.

Just don't allow a trade channel in that district.

They aren't just doing these updates for no reason:

This proves to be our next area for improvement, with our largest number of respondents at 36% between “too difficult” at 16.6%, and “just right” at 32.2%. Only 6.6% found the experience to be “very easy.” Making the process of finding other people for content easier is something we aim to fix – not just for the War in Kryta, but for Guild Wars overall,
Over a third of the people that filled out the WiK survey said they had a problem finding a team. That is just for one particular quest line and a fairly new one at that.
Now multiply that over all the quests in Guild Wars with all the people that have a bunch of things they want to complete.

This is what it is a solution for, they did the survey and got the answers, that is what the Embark Beach is there to cater for.

Then in addition it can attract those players that have a willingness to help out, or are just looking for something to do. These players no longer have to stand in X outpost looking to join a PUG, instead they will have all the players in one handy place.

It won't make outposts obsolete, at least not any more than they are now. You don't map into Ice Tooth Cave and get surprised that there is no one there. Most outposts in the game are empty unless there is a Zaishen Quest there that day or Nicholas is close.
For the former these will still be busy as the Embark Beach will simply map the group to that outpost so it will still be full of players. As for Nicholas that isn't generally a group thing so I'm sure players will still gather there.

As for lots of spam, well that just follows with more people. If all the traders move to this outposts from Kamadan then there will of course be more stuff going on.
